What is a Chamber Orchestra?
The word "chamber" comes from the French word chambre, which means "room," but a chamber orchestra can include up to 50 musicians, which is still smaller that the typical size of symphony orchestras! The sound of a chamber orchestra is different from a full orchestra due to the smaller number of instruments, orchestration, and acoustics.
Chamber music originated in the Renaissance period as a social activity. Baroque period pieces for small groups of musicians became popular, with trio sonatas being a favorite, and Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus were a few of the earliest chamber music pioneers.
